Skin aging is a common phenomenon as you grow older but it is worrying when this happens faster than it should. For most of us, how our skin looks is important and therefore accelerated aging is alarming. Sticking to a good skin care routine can help you slow down the aging process. Getting to know what factors affect the skin aging process is important. Some of these factors include:

  1. Smoking and alcohol consumption

‘Excessive consumption of alcohol is not good for your health.’ This common phrase is true and just to be clear, it is not good for your skin either. Smoking and drinking alters the amount of blood supplied to your skin. This in turn deprives your skin of the oxygen and hydration it needs for it to stay young hence increased aging.

  1. Sun damage as a result of ultraviolet rays

The sun is a good source of Vitamin D but then too much of something is poisonous. Being exposed to ultraviolet rays from the sun can lead to sun damage and contribute to your skin developing wrinkles at a faster rate.

  1. Poor diet choices and lack of exercise

What you eat can be reflected in your skin. Good diet choices, that is consumption of natural products will help you maintain a youthful look. On the other hand, taking too much sugar or junk food makes skin to age faster. This is because these foods lack the necessary nutrients needed by your body to maintain a youthful look.

Exercise makes it possible for blood to be supplied in all parts of the body hence ensuring that skin cells are adequately supplied with oxygen, collagen and moisture making your skin look young.

  1. Age

As you grow older, your skin ages. Aging is a normal process and the more you grow older, the more your skin grows older too. This explains why wrinkles are more common among older people compared to young people.

Your skin is not just skin, it is part of who you are, it is what we see when we first look at you, it is a description of you and therefore taking care of it is important. We cannot stop time and therefore unable to stop aging but we can slow it down. Aged skin or not, being comfortable in your own skin is the best thing you can ever do.
